Is Chlorine Damaging Your Hair?

It’s been really hot outside which means chances are you are taking a dip in a pool to cool off every now and then. Have you been afraid of the damage chlorine can do to your beautiful, healthy hair? You have a right to worry! Chlorine can be very harsh on your strands, especially if you have dry hair, thin hair, previously damaged hair, or hair that has been chemically or color treated. It’s not realistic to say never go swimming again so how do you combat the effects of chlorine? Here are a few simple tips:

  • Drench you hair with water before entering the pool. Ever notice that a sponge will only absorb so much water? Once it’s full, the water will just run off. Same thing happens to your hair so saturating your hair with water prior to swimming will make it less likely to absorb the chlorinated pool water.
  • Wear a swim cap. Before putting the cap on, get your hair wet with clean water and apply a light conditioner to your hair. This step will give you added protection.
  • Take time after swimming and give your hair a good rinse with clean water. This will remove some of the chlorine from your hair. Then, shampoo your hair. This will help remove the bulk of the chlorine.
  • Add moisture back into your locks. Replacing the moisture and protein that chlorine robs your hair of is just as important as shampooing to remove the chlorine, so after shampooing, give your hair a good condition. You may also want to use a leave-in protein conditioner because it will soothe dry hair and prevent split ends.
