Must-Have Vitamins for Optimal Hair Health

When your hair is healthy, it boosts your confidence and others take notice too. In order for your hair to have optimal hair growth and be at its healthiest level, there are certain vitamins that you should include in your diet (talk to a doctor before supplementing with over-the-counter vitamins).

Here are the top 5 vitamins to incorporate into your diet, along with foods that tend to be plentiful in those vitamins:

Vitamin A

Hair happens to be the fastest growing tissue in your body and in order for it to continue growing rapidly, it needs vitamin A. When your body is deficient in vitamin A, some people could notice hair loss. It plays an important role in keeping your hair moisturized and luckily for you, it’s easy to get in many common foods. Foods such as milk, eggs, yogurt, spinach, kale, carrots, potatoes, and pumpkins are all great places to start.

Vitamin D

Studies have shown that vitamin D plays a role in creating new hair follicles, which are small pores in the scalp that allow new hair to grow. People who are low in vitamin D may suffer from hair loss. While the sun helps our body to naturally produce vitamin D, adding dietary sources is always a wise idea. Foods with hefty amounts of vitamin D include fatty fish, mushrooms, fortified foods, and cod liver oil.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E has been proven to aid in new hair growth in as little as 1 year for those who has experienced hair loss. It also is an antioxidant that works to prevent oxidative stress. Yummy foods that contain vitamin E include almonds, spinach, avocados, and sunflower seeds.

B-Vitamins

Biotin is a very popular, widely publicized B-vitamin that packs a powerful punch for those who have experienced hair loss due to a biotin deficiency. For those with the deficiency, adding in biotin will help with hair growth and can be used as a hair loss treatment. Other B-vitamins work to create red blood cells. Red blood cells carry oxygen and other nutrients to hair follicles and also to the scalp. Get your B-vitamins in by consuming whole grains, meat, fish, almonds, seafood and dark, leafy greens.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is very important to your body. It is a strong antioxidant that protects against the oxidative stress that free radicals cause. Damage from free radicals has been known to prevent growth and make your hair age. Your body also uses vitamin C to make collagen, a protein that plays a critical role in hair structure. Vitamin C is also necessary for your body to absorb iron (iron is essential for hair growth). Make sure to add delicious foods such as strawberries, guavas, citrus fruits, and peppers to your diet and your vitamin C will be at optimal levels.

Your hair needs TLC to stay healthy, just like the rest of your body so be sure to give it what it needs.
