What Your Hair Could Be Saying About Your Health

A woman’s hair says a lot about her – her mood, if she’s in to current beauty trends, her morning hair routine, and sometimes even her favorite color! It’s true that your hair is largely determined by genetics, but other factors also contribute to the health of your hair such as the food you eat, your age, and the weather conditions. Your health can also have a great impact on your hair. Below are some things to look out for because they could indicate something bigger is going on.

Your Hair Is Falling Out

Could indicate: iron deficiency (anemia), polycystic ovarian syndrome, hypothyroidism, pregnancy, menopause, diabetes, or illness such as the flu

Your Hair is Dry

Could indicate: hormonal changes ranging from birth control, pregnancy, to menopause, or a thyroid condition.

Your Hair Isn’t Growing

Could indicate: protein deficiency

You’re Growing a Mustache

Could indicate: polycystic ovarian syndrome

You Have an Itchy Scalp

Could indicate: low sebum level

You Have Scaly Patches along Your Hairline

Could indicate: Psoriasis

If you feel you notice any of the hair issues mentioned above, please make an appointment with your doctor. It may be you are dealing with dry hair and need a moisturizing shampoo or conditioner, or are dealing with other easily manageable hair issues but in case something bigger is going on, it’s best to bring these concerns up to a medical professional.
