Men, Is Your Hair Thinning? Foods That Prevent Hair Loss

You first noticed it in the mirror as you were brushing your teeth and now you are obsessing over it…the first signs of hair loss. Sure, genetics plays a big role in your hairline, but so does the food you eat. Just like other parts of your body, hair needs a variety of nutrients to grow and be healthy. So put down that hat and head to the fridge for these foods that will help you keep that full head of hair.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Can be found in: Walnuts, salmon, flaxseeds, tuna, kale

Benefits: Nourishes hair follicles and promotes healthy hair growth. Adds elasticity to your hair, which prevents hair from breaking off.

Zinc

Can be found in: Beef, chickpeas, wheat germ, oysters, roast beef, veal liver

Benefits:  Boosts tissue growth and repair. Regulates hormones and helps maintain production of oil secreting glands on the scalp, which helps your hair grow.

Protein

Can be found in: Greek yogurt, egg yolks, kale, peanuts, beans, peas, lentils, tofu, chicken, turkey

Benefits: Your hair is mainly made up of protein so if you don’t get enough in your diet, you will suffer hair loss.

Iron

Can be found in: Dark leafy greens, whole grains, beans, red meat, turkey, egg yolks, clams, oysters

Benefits: Helps deliver blood to your body’s cells. If you don’t get enough of this nutrient, your blood can’t carry enough oxygen to your scalp for good hair growth.

Vitamins A and C

Can be found in: Swiss chard, spinach, broccoli, sweet potatoes, pumpkin

Benefits: Both vitamins add to the production of sebum, the oily substance that your hair follicles produce. As nature’s hair conditioner, it keeps your hair from breaking. Vitamin C increases the amount of blood-boosting iron that your body can put to use.

Magnesium

Can be found in: Almonds, spinach, cashews, lentils, brown rice, halibut

Benefits: Magnesium is essential for hair growth. Deficiencies in this vitamin have shown to lead to hair loss in both men and women.

Selenium

Can be found in: Brazil nuts, tuna, halibut, shrimp sardines, ham

Benefits: Selenium stimulates hair follicles to encourage hair growth. Deficiencies in this element lead to hair follicle abnormalities, reduced growth, and hair loss.
